Niniejszy referat przypomina ważką rolę awarii w rozwoju materiałów, systemów konstrukcyjnych i rozwiązań architektonicznych po to, aby pokazać jak wciąż ewoluujące budownictwo lądowe staje przed nowym ogromnym zadaniem wdrożenia nowego pokolenia materiałów, nowych metod projektowania, konstruowania oraz wykonawstwa. W tym coraz szybszym tempie wprowadzania usprawnień technologicznych zarządzanie projektem budowlanym przestaje być ekstrapolacją starych metod i wiedzą nabywaną przez doświadczenie, a staje się bardzo istotnym elementem procesu realizacji projektu. Referat pokazuje, jak tradycyjny dylemat projektu budowlanego: jakość i sprawność obiektu – koszt realizacji – tempo realizacji stają się tym bardziej istotne, gdy narzędzia informatyczne pozornie pozwalają na monitorowanie aktualnego stanu realizacji i kosztów po stronie zarządzania, jak również otrzymywania informacji o procesie podejmowania i wdrażania decyzji po stronie projektowania.

To start with this paper reminds us of important role failures of constructed facilities played in the development of new construction materials, structural systems, and architectural solutions. At the times of rapid evolution of the construction industry which is facing a daunting task of implementation of new generations of materials, new methods of analysis, design, and construction technologies, construction failures cannot be the milestones of changes and new solutions. In the ever increasing rate of technological change, project management can no-longer evolve through extrapolation based on experience of old proven methods, but rather it also has to undergo major changes to assure its elevation to the position of an integral part of the project development and execution. The paper shows how the principal conflict in the constructed facility project process, namely quality and performance of the constructed facility – cost of execution – and time of implementation, becomes even more pronounced, when information technology tools, only seemingly allow the monitoring of the actual execution progress of the project as well as cost-to-date, to collect and provide access to information about the decision process at the design stage, and at the construction planning phase, demands new tools to draw rapid conclusions from the data and to provide timely management decisions. Those tools have to be a part of modern engineering and construction education.
